George Bernard Shaw’s Romance depicts the unlikely relationship between the Cockney flower seller Eliza Doolittle and phonetics virtuoso, Professor Higgins. When speech professor Henrietta Higgins makes a bet with a fellow scholar that she can pass off a common Cockney flower girl as the pinnacle of English society, she proves to be an expert in phonetics but a novice with people. By doubling down on the feminist themes of the original play and reimagining the role of Henry Higgins into Henrietta Higgins, this production’s Pygmalion is more than just “My Fair Lady” minus the music. It is a humane story of the transformation of a young woman’s life and both a timeless and timely comedy about love, feminism, and classism.
