Harbor History at the 25th Street Mural Project-25th St. & Patton Ave.
April 26, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am
$25.00Join mosaic artist Julie Bender and Atlas Obscura Society Los Angeles Field Agent Sandi Hemmerlein for an in-depth discussion and exploration of the 25th Street Mural Project.
It’s the culmination of a 10-year dream—to bring the community together and beautify the 200-foot retaining walls that run along 25th Street in San Pedro.
The large-scale mural depicts the history and culture of Paseo Del Mar, the coastal route that runs through the greater part of San Pedro. In addition to pelicans, whales, and mermaids, also represented are the many people, industries, and landmarks that characterize this harbor community—from the Tongva villagers to the Korean Bell of Friendship.
The project officially started in February 2017 and is slated for completion in May 2019. Bender is still putting the finishing touches on this community art project—finally bringing it to fruition after a complex navigation of permits, ordinance amendments, and community involvement.
During our “behind the scenes” visit, we’ll learn about the San Pedro Waterfront Arts District and the process of molding clay, glazing tiles, and wrangling throngs of volunteers to tell the history of San Pedro, one tile at a time.
