2nd Annual Eco Fest-Deane Dana Friendship Park

FreeLA County Park’s Friendship Park & Nature Center and the Northwest San Pedro Neighborhood Council invite all community residents to join us in having fun and promoting EcoFest – a FREE EVENT that celebrates Sustainable Living practices & Environmental Awareness.
EcoFest is a festival that celebrates the fall season – promoting conservation of our resources, tree planting, garden preparation and rain water harvesting, having fun while discovering many of the wild creatures that live amongst us in our coastal and inland communities. The event aims to encourage children & adults to explore ways that they can become better stewards of the Earth.
EcoFest will feature LIVE MUSIC by LBU Long Beach Unplugged, a FREE SHADE TREE GIVEAWAY (to residents of the City of Los Angeles), a presentation on how to raise Monarch butterflies at home, a workshop & demonstration on rain-water harvesting and how to set up a rain barrel, face painting, bug and animal discoveries, crafts, games, wildflower seed balls, chalk drawing. Bring a picnic! There are beautiful views of the harbor and Catalina Island.

RainWater Harvesting & Gardening Workshop
Thinking about installing a rain barrel or building a rain garden, but not sure where to begin? Join Cindy Berglund of Rain Barrels International to learn how a simple “do-it-yourself” project can maximize your ability to capture rain for reuse! Cindy will discuss the importance of rainwater harvesting, the benefits of a rain barrel, the installation process, helpful methods to conserve water on your property without rainfall, and will review the rebates offered by the Metropolitan Water District and LAWDP.

“Raising Monarch Butterflies” with Judith Davies.
Learn how to create your own butterfly habitat and bring butterflies into your life. Judith Davies has spent years raising monarch butterflies – releasing hundreds, each season, to the wild. Judith will take you through a monarch’s life cycle – from egg to emerging adult butterfly – and will share her successes and her struggles in trying to help this beautiful and mysterious migratory insect

All these delights wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for insect pollination. “Bee” sure to visit the booth hosted by local beekeepers Lee & Theresa – you will get to peek into the workings of a hive and get a “taste” of what these little ladies work so hard to create. Learn how pollinators help us and the environment, and the many ways you can protect and support them in your gardens and landscapes. Just come and be part of the growing movement to learn about these important workers, and help our pollinators to thrive.
